Inclusion Incursion Continues- Hootie Helmeted

Report

Our earlier report came immediately following Masters Week 2002 (see Augusta National 19-April report). Since then, the salvos continue. Small arms fire has given way to the big guns.

A recent Mommy offensive came in June when the Mother of all Mommies, Martha Burke, chair-mommmy of the National Council of Mommies Organizations, sent Hootie Johnson, Augusta chairman, a letter demanding women be added to the club membership. A dreaded “Mommy-boycott” of sponsors was indicated in the letter.

Hootie, in a Churchillean statement, replied: "Augusta National will not be bullied, threatened or intimidated to add mommy members nor will we allow our corporate sponsors to be drawn into this. We appreciate everything our media sponsors have done for us. Accordingly, to spare them from having to deal with these Mommies, next year we will sponsor The Masters ourselves."

Could this be Augusta National’s Finest Hour?
